Sono passate circa 48 ore dal mio arrivo a Berlino per il 26c3. Sono un po’ spaesato, mi guardo attorno curioso e rincoglionito … sono nel paradiso dei nerds … Da due giorni sono dentro al Berlin Conference Center, sempre al computer o ad ascoltare qualche talk… con pause solo per dormire o per mangiare.

La sorpresa più gradita è stata quella di trovare un vecchio amico di Ninux.org, Jonathan, che si è fatto il viaggio da Londra per venire al 26C3. Oltre a me Jonathan e Marco ho visto ieri solo altri due italiani di sfuggita con le felpe del metro olografix… ma in generale la presenza italiana è molto bassa.

In realtà qui non c’è bisogno nemmeno di alzarsi per seguire i talks, siamo tutti con IPv4 pubblico ed IPv6 e possiamo seguire i talks in streaming ad alta qualità con VLC. Anche voi da casa potete farlo! Vi scrivo seduto nell’hacker center che vedete in foto qui sotto:

Ieri ho sentito due talks molto interessanti. Il primo talk parlava di quanto è bassa la sicurezza nel GSM, e di come è possibile decifrare le telefonate in real time invertendo l’algoritmo di cifratura A5/1 usando le rainbow tables. Il secondo talk invece raccontava come entrare in una rete protetta sfruttando un po’ di bug qua e la… che da soli sembrano bugs da niente, ma quando vengono messi insieme mettono in ginocchio anche una rete sicura.

Il talk degli IPv4 fuckups mi ha veramente entusiasmato ! Pidgin ed Adium sono vulnerabili se vengono usate le emoticon durante una sessione di chat, per un bug protocollare di messenger, è possibile copiare sul PC della persona con cui stiamo copiando file arbitrari invece di immagini in modo relativamente semplice I drivers delle schede di rete ethernet gestiscono male le MTU… e così mandando frames ethernet MTU con dimensioni “ad-hoc” è possibile spegnere e accendere le la scheda di rete un firewall

Qualche minuto fa ho registrato l’IMEI del mio telefono su Event Phone. I ragazzi qui hanno installato una Base Station GSM con il software OpenBTS, un mostro software con un backend Asterisk che permette di farci telefonare tra noi usando i normali telefoni GSM… in realtà il mio telefono ancora non si è associato alla loro rete… dovrei tirare fuori l’IMSI dalla mia SIM ma senza uno stick USB UMTS non posso farlo …

C’è una stanza con tutta gente che salda, stampanti RepRap, quadkopters e spippoli vari per musica elettronica …

per ora vi lascio, quando torno a Roma farò un resoconto completo Sono seduto al tavolo “wireless” insieme a svariata gente di Freifunk ed OpenWRT. Non tutti possono sedersi qui, se non ti conosce nessuno nel mondo del wireless dopo un po’ arriva qualche tedesco e ti invita ad andare via. Ovviamente per noi di Ninux non c’è stato nessun problema

I’m so sorry I was totally busy and I hadn’t time yet to blog about the Ninux Day !!! So it is now time to write something !

It was our first Ninux Day, and it was great !

Every started Thursday night. Many of our international guests were already here in Rome, so we had a Warm up Party at Fusolab.

The following morning I went to Defrag_ to open up the place around 10.00, because the first people were expected by 12.00. Thanks to Andrea we had some beautiful posters at the entrance, as you can see in the picture.

Friday was quite a busy day. We had  many interesting talks, and people started to know each other. Only on the first day we had more than 50 people attending, and many were coming from abroad. On Sunday we had registered 123 people !

The first talk started a bit late, Ulf was the first one to have his slides ready, so I sent him on stage He started an interesting talk on how to manage cameras with embedded devices running OpenWRT and gphoto. The goal was to use the embedded devices to make panoramic pictures. Friday talks were on many different topics. After Ulf we had Alexander List talking about the Open Spectrum. After a while the “use the wiki” signs we had put everywhere at Defrag_ started to work… the hackers were self managing the event their self, timetable was optimized, talks were shaped to the avaiable timeslots… it is always cool to see how the hacker society can self manage an event

To help the people know each other we organized a permanent PGP Signing Party. Most of us exchange emails during the year, very often attaching patches and snippets of code. It is a good thing to make sure about the identity of the person who is writing to you. So the key signing had begin ! After a while people were interacting together, coding, discussing about protocol, showing their work to others.

The long Ninux Day continued for the all weekend until Sunday in the late afternoon. For the first time I have seen people from wireless communities from all Europe actually working together and exchanging ideas. I was very very happy about the result, even if organizing everything I missed many details on the presentation and works that were going on ! But it was ok! I just can’t do too many things at the same time

The very good thing about this event is that now people are still discussing and working on the ideas and projects developed in the weekend in Rome. On the Ninux Day mailing list and on the nodedb-interop list you will find community members from all europe actively working.

Well, it is too had to describe the Ninux Day in such a short blog post, so if this year you have missed it, I suggest it is much better to come next year and see with your eyes !

Le reti wireless comunitarie sono infrastrutture di comunicazione costruite dagli utenti stessi, senza l’intermediazione di compagnie telefoniche e di telecomunicazioni. Il fenomeno sta crescendo in tutto il mondo ed in particolare in Europa, soprattutto grazie al basso costo dei dispositivi wireless. In Italia la diffusione di questo tipo di reti tarda a decollare, sia per gli ostacoli messi in piedi, in maniera consapevole o meno, dalle istituzioni, sia perche’ il potenziale di queste infrastrutture non e’ stato pienamente compreso. Per diffondere la cultura delle reti comunitarie e promuovere il loro sviluppo anche nella nostra penisola, dal 27 al 29 Novembre, al Defrag_ si terra’ il primo Ninux Day, nel quale interverranno sia membri di reti comunitarie di Germania, Grecia, Spagna, Austria, Slovenia ed Italia, sia accademici provenienti da varie universita’ europee, sia artisti appartenenti alla scena 8-bit romana.
