Just back from Berlin, where I went with my Ninux friends at the Wireless Community Weekend 2010. As always a lot of interesting news and it is good to see old friends involved in Wireless Community Networks in other cities and countries.
It was 8 Italian Ninux guys, 7 from Rome and 1 from Pisa. Yeah, this year Ninux is spreading country-wide. The students from Eigenlab with the strong tech help of Gioacchino are starting a new Ninux network in the city of Pisa.
This trip as you can imagine, was a lot about nerds and programming/installing/debugging software firmwares and so on … but not only…. Anyway here the picture of the arrival at C-Base, computer+beer
As my friends know I’m also a fun of riding bicycles in the cities as an alternative to cars, and Berlin is a way ahead of Rome in this direction. I’ve seen several fixies around but also cool German bikes not easy to find in Rome. Here in the picture some nice bike I’ve seen parked around
We also had a lot of typical German food, especially Berliner beer, club-mate and Doner Kebab. Nerds diet consists in eating a lot of food regardless of time and space, so whenever hungry the nerds quit of all the activities to go finding food In C-Base this was easy because the legendary Freifunk Barbeque was on 24/7, and it was possible to go there at any time and cook something.
Talking about some mesh tech, I spent most of the time with Mitar installing the Nodewatcher developed in Ljubljana (Slovenia) on the Ninux network. It is really a great software and I’m already looking and to graphs generated for the Ninux nodes. The system gives you a lot of precious information to debug/monitor the network. The work together was very productive and Mitar opened a lot of tickets on his Trac, because this was actually the first installation on another network.
Also the meeting solved some nasty bug of OLSR with IPv6 that Gioacchino reported to the OLSR team.
Me and Claudio had a meeting with Kloschi to brainstorm a bit about the Radiomate project, that is starting in a few days. Some very useful thoughts came out of the discussion and I just can’t wait to see the results !
Well next nerd event is soon ! Even if time every time in Berlin flies away so quickly, I’m happy anyways, because I’m meeting many of my German friends again in Bracciano for the BattleMesh !
Un mese senza scrivere sul blog !!! Il tempo vola e non me ne accorgo. E’ tornata la bella stagione, e sopratutto l’ora legale. E così con la macchina sempre più parcheggiata al Tuscolo, ho iniziato a fare di nuovo su e giù dal monte con la bicicletta per andare a lavoro. Gambe in forma e voglia di uscire, e così io ed Alessandro ci siamo fatti un bel weekend troglociclistico.
Tutto inizia Venerdì dopo il lavoro con il Critical Mass. La CM di Aprile, l’ultima prima della grande Ciemmona. Porto il nuovo tandem graziella alla sua prima Critical Mass! Gran divertimento con invasione dello stato pontificio !
E mentre noi facevamo il Critical Mass a Roma… a Madrid si preparavano al giorno seguente per la Criticona!
Lasciando da parte la tristezza per non essere andati a Madrid a causa dei troppi impegni qui a Roma …. parliamo del giorno seguente…. Il 1 maggio era 1 anno che ho preso il tandem giallone, e così per festeggiare e farsi 4 passi in bicicletta sono andato con Alessandro al mare, a casa di Arianna che organizzava “Il pranzo degli sconosciuti”. Una di queste pazzate stradivertenti di Ary, che ora è tornata in fase scheggia e ci divertiamo un sacco quando si esce insieme
Abbiamo pedalato in totale un 80ina di Km, da Roma siamo andati a casa di Arianna nei pressi dello Zion, e poi (dopo tanto cibo ed alcool) siamo tornati.
La cosa più simpatica del viaggio è stato vedere sulla via di Trigoria una macchina che ci superava a folle velocità, forare qualche metro più avanti per via di una buca ! “Noi in bici e voi a piedi” ! ahahah
Anche al ritorno ce la siamo cavata alla grande, mentre gli automobilisti si facevano la coda sulla colombo noi andavamo tranquilli a velocità di passeggio verso la città.
Veramente un bel weekend del 1 maggio, le pedalate, la compagnia, la bellissima casa di Arianna al mare !!! Very good !!!
Ah e poi dopo gli 80Km mica siamo andati a dormire ! Siamo andati al concerto al Forte a sentire il Piotta !!!!
Lo scorso weekend abbiamo risolto tutti i problemi tecnici, e finalmente anche alla EX SNIA (dove si trova la ciclofficina Don Chisciotte) c’è la connessione ad Internet. Un buon risultato, soprattutto in previsione di tante persone in arrivo dall’estero a fine Maggio per la Ciemmona.
Il problema tecnico? Sul tetto del Fusolab una scheda miniPCI si era rovinata, e non aveva più abbastanza sensibilità. Probabilmente colpa di un fulmine Una volta sostituita tutto ha ripreso a funzionare.
La rete di Ninux si espande sempre di più, e con la bella stagione sempre più vicina abbiamo in programma nuovi nodi di rete !

Sabato 20 marzo io Raf e Pierlu siamo andati sul tetto della EX SNIA a mettere il nodo Ninux. All’inizio grande ottimismo, perché con il binocolo si
vedeva la nostra antenna sul Fusolab. Distanza 1 Km. Però il link (ancora) non va.
Un link decisivo per portare Internet in un posto vissuto da un sacco di persone. Inoltre in occasione della Ciemmona la SNIA diventa un grande campeggio per ciclisti critici che vengono da tutto il mondo, e quindi la connessione ad Internet è quasi indispensabile per permettere a queste persone di comunicare.
Oltre alle difficoltà tecniche anche le solite difficoltà pratiche, come ad esempio un tetto altissimo ! Per fortuna sono riuscito a salire, anche se la discesa è stata abbastanza eroica come potete vedere dal video !

Una volta sostituita tutto ha ripreso a funzionare.
